Jack Morris suspended indefinitely after using racist accent during Shohei Ohtani at-bat
Tigers analyst Jack Morris found himself at the center of a bit of controversy on Tuesday night, and now he finds himself on the sidelines.
During the sixth inning of Tuesday’s Tigers-Angels matchup, Tigers color analyst Morris let loose a racist, stereotypical accent, seemingly mocking English-speaking Asians as Shohei Ohtani was stepping up to the plate: “Be very, very careful,” Morris said of Ohtani in the accent.
Later in the game, during the next Ohtani at-bat, Morris apologized for the line.
The full exchange:
“Well, folks, Shohei Ohtani is at the plate, and it has been brought to my attention that I sincerely apologize if I offended anybody, especially anybody in the Asian community for what I said about pitching and being careful about Shohei Ohtani. I did not intend for any offensive thing, and I apologize if I did. I certainly respect and have the utmost respect for this guy, and I don’t blame the pitcher for walking him.”
Morris’ something of a non-apology apology was widely criticized.
Bally Sports ultimately decided to suspend Morris for the racially insensitive accent, and had support of the Tigers organization as well.
Morris has been an analyst for Tigers broadcasts since 2015.
