Packers’ Aaron Rodgers wants to team up with Clay Matthews again: ‘Bring him back’

Aaron Rodgers convinced the Packers to bring back Randall Cobb after a couple years away from the team. Could he do the same with Clay Matthews?

It looks as if Rodgers may try to make that happen.

Late Friday night, Rodgers, Cobb and Packers tackle David Bakhtiari expressed on Instagram their desire to bring Matthews back to Green Bay.  Rodgers’ message was the clearest as he re-posted Cobb’s picture of Matthews and captioned it simply: “Bring him back.”

Matthews spent the first decade of his career with the Packers. He was selected in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft and quickly became a feared pass rusher. He was a key part of the team’s Super Bowl championship in the 2010 season; he had 17 sacks (regular season and postseason) that year.

Matthews had several more great years with the Packers. He totaled 83.5 sacks during his 10 seasons in Green Bay and was named a first-team All-Pro in 2010.

But would Green Bay want him back now? The 35-year-old didn’t play during the 2020 season but he totaled eight sacks in 13 games with the Rams in 2019. He could still be a situational pass rusher.

The Packers have three quality edge rushers in Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith and Rashan Gary. They could add depth, especially with Za’Darius Smith on the non-football injury (NFI) list.

Plus, Rodgers and the Packers are still mending fences after a prolonged offseason feud. So if Rodgers really wants Matthews, Green Bay could sign him to extend another olive branch to their disgruntled quarterback.
