Who is the ‘mother f—er’ Tom Brady is talking about? Twitter names Jimmy Garoppolo the target
Tom Brady, luckily, has enough money to throw a dollar bill in the swear jar.
Brady’s free agency courtship following the 2019 NFL season was pretty well documented and reported, with the quarterback having several landing spots that made sense for his services
In a brief trailer for HBO’s next “The Shop” episode, Brady offers a delicious tease, citing disbelief to a certain incumbent quarterback — he calls a “mother f—er” — would be the reason for him not signing with a team.
“One of the teams, they weren’t interested at the very end,” Brady says. “I was thinking, ‘You’re sticking with that mother f—er?'”
So, who exactly is ” that mother f—er ?”
Brady’s free agency suitors wasn’t exactly far-ranging, with the veteran quarterback eventually signing with the Buccaneers. But there were a few teams notably in on Brady’s services: the Buccaneers, the Chargers and the 49ers rounded out the top landing spots.
With the Chargers moving on from Philip Rivers — and much later opting to draft Justin Herbert in the 2020 NFL Draft — that leaves the 49ers as one of the only realistic destination for Brady; That means that the “mother f—er” that Brady could be referring to was incumbent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Garoppolo was drafted by the Patriots in 2014 and many thought he was the heir apparent to Brady in New England. He would eventually be traded to the 49ers in 2017, and some reports indicated Garoppolo was the speedbump keeping Brady from signing with the 49ers in 2019.
San Francisco was reportedly one of Brady’s top destinations in free agency, with rumors that San Francisco said “no” to Brady just days before Brady decided to sign with the Buccaneers.
The 49ers stuck out the season with Jimmy G, opting to draft quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Twitter sleuths determined that the 49ers quarterback was the recipient of Brady’s label, and aired out the laundry on Monday:
